About the course
If you want to study an engineering-based undergraduate degree but need additional academic and English language support, this Engineering pathway will provide you with a basic foundation for further studies and the skills required to progress on to an undergraduate degree in Engineering. You will learn about different engineering concepts, the principles of mechanics and the mathematical knowledge required to develop both the theoretical and practical applications of engineering. In addition to the engineering specialism modules, the programme also provides a solid grounding in the core knowledge and skills recognised to prepare you for future study. Upon successfully passing this programme (subject to progression requirements), you will be guaranteed a place on one of our engineering undergraduate degrees. This course will introduce you to life studying in the UK and will develop the core academic and English language skills you will need to progress on to an undergraduate degree with Northumbria University. One module, English for Foundation, will focus on your language development to help you meet the requirements of your progression course and to refine your language further in an academic context. A second module, Academic Practice, will enable you to understand the range of core academic skills that you will use in the whole programme. Four of the modules on the programme will be focused on preparing you for undergraduate study in the UK. This includes a Project Module where you will specialise in a particular aspect from within your broad subject area. You will create an artefact as well as engage in the pre-planning, project management and post-project reflection. These skills will enable you to plan and manage key parts of your undergraduate studies The other modules will cover a range of core engineering and mathematical areas including applied algebra, engineering design, trigonometry, engineering problem solving and use of statistics in engineering. You will be taught the theory, look at examples and then test out the some of the key learning each week in a workshop space. These modules will enable you to develop a wide range of skills in order to think critically about engineering and various applications of engineering in real-world situations. You will understand how to prepare for practical sessions as well as report on your findings and what they mean.
